What Steps Do I Need to Take to Become a

Substitute Teacher for Benson Schools?

Step #1

FINGERPRINT CLEARANCE CARD: Get your fingerprint clearance card. See Melissa Vansickle (Payroll) in the district office to get the necessary forms. Applying for your fingerprint clearance card can take up to 8 weeks so applicants are encouraged to start here and start early.

Step #2

SUBSTITUTE TEACHING CERTIFICATE: Get your Arizona substitute teaching certificate. If you have a Bachelor’s Degree, visit the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) website: www.azed.gov to download the application, under the Educator Certification tab. If you are a certified teacher already and have a valid Arizona teaching certificate, you can skip this step; but we will need a copy of your teaching certificate.

An applicant who holds a valid elementary, secondary, or special education certificate in another state may be issued an Arizona reciprocal teaching certificate for one year.  Arizona has fingerprint reciprocity with 19 other states (Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming) – please see ADE website for additional information.

Step #3

BENSON USD SUBSTITUTE TEACHER APPLICATION: Complete our Substitute Teacher Application located on TalentEd. You will also need to upload your resume, letter of interest, transcripts, Arizona teaching certificate and fingerprint clearance card. If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Lisa Benton (Human Resources) at (520) 720-6736 or lbenton@bensonusd.org for assistance.

Step #4

INTERVIEW: Once you complete the application process,  we will contact you to setup an interview with Micah Mortensen (BUSD Superintendent).

Step #5

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER ORIENTATION AND TRAINING: If the interview is successful, you will be invited to our next Substitute Teacher Orientation and Training. Attending this training is mandatory. Once you have successfully completed this training, you will be added to our Substitute Teacher Pool and can begin subbing for us.

Step #6

NEW HIRE PAPERWORK: In order to be paid, you will need to complete new hire paperwork, which is available on our district website. If you have questions regarding this step, Melissa Vansickle (Payroll) can be reached at (520) 720-6734 or mvansickle@bensonusd.org
